spectacular fundraising

What a view...

This is what you get if you fundraise for Get Connected!

35 intrepid adventurers recently supported Get Connected with a trip to Morocco for which they each raised £2,000.

Once there, they spent three days trekking through the desert with a camel train, to reach a nomad settlement in need of structural support, where they spent three days building a ford across the wide (but dry!) riverbed.

If you're interested in a similar trip or other adventure, expeditions across the globe are run by various companies to support charity - contact Get Connected for more information.

young people get their own champions

Seven youth organisations have joined forces to form the Coalition for Young People. Like Get Connected, they think young people often get a bad press and fewer opportunities than they deserve.  They've created a manifesto - here are their demands:

1. We want great places for young people to go and great things to do

2. We want young people to be able to make the most of facilities on offer

3. We want young people to flourish - to get the most from their education and wider learning - in school, in their youth centre and at home

4. We want young people to get the help and support they need when they need it

5. We want more young people involved in decision making

6. We want great people to work with young people to inspire, motivate, support and help them gain new skills

7. We want to prevent vulnerable young people from getting involved in crime

8. We want to make sure all Government policies work for young people not against

All of which make up a pretty comprehensive vision of a better society for young people, don't you think? You can download more details on the manifesto on the National Youth Agency's website

do you know your rights?

[do you know your rights?]

Would you complain if you thought you'd been treated unfairly by a retailer?

According to the uninspiringly named Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, 16-24 year olds are very good at buying things online but not so good at complaining if they feel the purchase hasn't gone according to plan.

It seems that people are less likely to assert their consumer rights when buying things online than offline, and it's young people who feel most ignorant about what their rights actually are.

Wish you knew more about your rights? Consumer Direct's website will tell you what you're entitled to when buying things.
