Jargon

Intruder alert, intruder alert... Interrupting your regularly scheduled reading for a new kid on the blog (do you see what I did there!). Yes, James has invited me to join him on the If At First.... blog reel to share my news and views on lots of different things.

When James first asked me to write for the blog, I have to admit I was a bit nervous. I wasn't sure that I had anything much to say that needed sharing with the world but lo and behold when I took the time to think about it a few things came to mind, starting with the brand new Jargon Buster (www.gotateenager.org.uk) that Parentline Plus have developed to help parents understand what their teenagers are saying.

Now I'm not going to reveal my age or anything but I do consider myself to be fairly young and down with all things cool but even I had never heard of a 'grawp', a 'bevvie shack' or 'long cat' (which apparently refers to any form of cheap meat based fast food) before.

I was surprised to see some other words and phrases included such as 'bird', 'chav' and 'minger' as, rightly or wrongly, these words do appear to have entered the nation's volabulary.

I’d definitely like to see the term 'boghopper' enter the Oxford English dictionary next year though. It's interesting to see that there doesn't appear to be any slang words or phrases that begin with the letter 'x' or 'q' but if you do know any, you can always add words or edit any of the definitions on the site for that matter.
