Volunteer interview

As part of our on-going series of volunteer interviews, this month we chatted with Nina.

That's a picture she drew of herself over there.

Don't worry about the purple skin tone, she's not really a Ribena berry.

Why did you start volunteering?
I just wanted to do something a bit different - more than just going to work everyday. I was also keen to develop some new skills in supporting other people especially on a telephone helpline works.

Why did you choose to work specifically with young people?

GC just sounded like a great organisation. The way they can help people deal with any problem made me think the service would be a good one to be involved in and learn a lot about the different challenges young people face. There's a lot of people who have no where to turn and taking calls has made me realise how much young people need a bit of extra support to help them out.

Do you remember your first call? What was it like?
I can't remember my first call but I do remember being quite nervous for my first few months at GC! I'm now much more confident taking calls and webchats even though you never know what issues will be at the other end of the phone. I really enjoy working with new volunteers now and helping them as they train and settle in at GC.

What was the most moving call you've ever taken?
It's really hard to say - there are so many calls that have moved me in some way. The ones that really stick out are from people who have never spoken to anyone before about what's going on their life. Just taking that first step to talk and find out about how to get some help is such a huge leap for them and it is very rewarding to be able to support them and build their confidence to get the help they need.

What was it like for you as a young person going through difficulties? Were there helplines available? Where did you turn for support?
I think I was pretty lucky that I had very supportive family and friends when I was growing up so no helplines needed. There's one friend at school who I talked to a lot and we are still mates now and help each other out a lot too. Taking calls at GC has really made me realise how lucky I am to have that support as a lot of the people who call really do have no where else to turn.

What do you get up to when you're not at Get Connected?
I work at an international development charity called VSO we send volunteers around the world to share their skills - my role focuses on keeping people involved when the get back to the UK.

What's your ringtone?
Just a traditional ring-ring!

What was the last film you saw? What did you think of it?
It was 27 Dresses - I really enjoyed it but nice, predictable rom coms are my favourite!

Describe your Get Connected experience in five words
Always a challenge but great rewards! - OK it's 6 words but does "a" count?
